M-119 Tunnel of Trees Detour Guide (2026)
Yes — the Tunnel of Trees is still open!
If you’ve heard rumors that the entire M-119 Tunnel of Trees is closed for the summer, don’t worry—the famous scenic drive along Lake Michigan is still open and accessible.
A short stretch of M-119 between Good Hart and Cross Village is currently closed due to spring washout damage, but travelers can still reach Cross Village, Legs Inn, and the northern portion of the Tunnel of Trees using a clearly marked detour.
For anyone planning a Northern Michigan road trip in 2026, the drive north remains just as beautiful as ever.
Save it to your phone before your drive north.
How the M-119 Detour Works
The detour route follows local roads around the two washout areas before reconnecting with M-119.
We recently drove the northern detour ourselves, and the additional drive time was minimal—roughly 5 minutes and 30 seconds, or about the same amount of time the original stretch of road would normally take during busy summer traffic.
Can You Still Drive the Tunnel of Trees?
Absolutely.
The Tunnel of Trees scenic route between Harbor Springs and Cross Village remains one of the most beautiful drives in Michigan, especially during spring, summer, and fall color season.
You can still:
- Drive M-119 along Lake Michigan
- Visit Cross Village and Legs Inn
- Explore Good Hart and local shops
- Experience the famous Tunnel of Trees roadside scenery
- Travel north for summer vacations and weekend getaways
The detours are temporary and straightforward, and all local businesses in Cross Village remain open and welcoming visitors for the 2026 season.
Visiting Cross Village in 2026
Peninsulas Cross Village opens for the season on Friday, May 15, 2026.
As always, summer in Cross Village means scenic drives along Lake Michigan, Zoo-de-Mack weekend traffic and cyclists, motorcycles cruising M-119, Northern Michigan road trips, stops at local shops, restaurants, and beaches, and long evenings at the top of the Tunnel of Trees.
Despite the temporary road closure, the village is still very much open for the season.
