Mackinac Bridge, Center Span. The center span of a five-mile bridge being constructed across the Straits of Mackinac connecting Michigan’s two great peninsulas at Mackinaw City on the lower and St. Ignace on the upper. Designed by Dr. D.B. Steinman, the bridge is over five miles long. The center spans soar 560 feet and there is 150 feet of clearance beneath. Construction began in May 1954 and the bridge is scheduled to open in 1957.
