This modern interpretation draws from Michigan’s historic seal, using simplified forms to echo the state’s enduring values. Native wildlife—elk, moose, and the American bald eagle—stand in for strength and resilience, while the central shield hints at one of Michigan’s iconic horizons, somewhere between sunrise and sunset. Admitted to the Union in 1837, Michigan’s motto Tuebor—“I will defend”—speaks to its frontier roots and the steady resolve that continues to define the state.
