Launched in 1958, the Edmund Fitzgerald was the largest ship on the Great Lakes until 1971. Known for its impressive size and sleek design, the “Fitz” became a workhorse of the iron ore trade between Duluth, Minnesota and Detroit, Michigan. Tragically, the vessel sank during a fierce storm on Lake Superior on November 10, 1975, with all 29 crew members lost. The ship’s mysterious final voyage inspired songs, documentaries, and generations of Great Lakes storytelling.
